8 Great Colorado Hot Springs For Relax & Soak

Colorado offers about 90 mineral hot springs in the state. Some of them are well developed, while others are wild, and you need to hike there. So far, we have been to seven of the paid pools and found one, free of charge. Check our list with eight Colorado hot springs where you can relax and soak your body all year round.

Strawberry Hot Springs near Steamboat Springs

Strawberry Park Natural Hot Springs is one of the best springs we have visited. It is located in the Rocky Mountains, about 7 miles north of Steamboat Springs, and 160 miles northwest of Denver. You can combine your ski, hiking, or biking trip with a visit to Strawberry Hot Springs. The 3 hours drive is worth it for a soak at these beautiful natural hot springs.

We visited in winter, and it was a magical picture with the snow around us.

Strawberry Park Natural Hot Springs Details

Entrance fee: $20.00 cash or checks only, no credit cards accepted
Reservations: Required at their website. No walk-ups

2 hours limit at the pools
Dogs are prohibited.
Restrooms are in operation with limited changing room facilities. It is highly recommended to arrive wearing a swimsuit to expedite entering the pools.

Soak your body in the dessert - Sand Dunes Swimming Pool & RV Park

Combine your trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park with a soaking at the lovely Sand Dunes Swimming Pool & RV Park at Hooper, CO. You can find it 30 miles west of the national park and add it as an additional stop to your trip.

Right in the desert, this complex offers a relaxing atmosphere, a large mineral pool, and even an adult-only area called Greenhouse. They also provide food, drinks, and camping sites.

We’ve been there twice, and both times, we had a great time.

The Greenhouse

The 10,000-square foot Greenhouse features three small soaking tubs with varying temperatures and a 10×75 foot zero-entry pool. It is a pretty cool place, especially evening time.

There is also a beautiful water fountain feature, a ten-person sauna, gardens, numerous patio spaces, and an onsite Steel Box Bar. The best part of this place is that it’s for adults only.

Furthermore, you will find an excellent campground and RV park behind the pool. Easily can stay a night or two while exploring the area around. They have good showers/ bathrooms, and the tent locations are perfect. Keep in mind that on-site campers have the opportunity to reserve up to two Greenhouse slots per day, which is the best part.

Admission rates are $15.00 for the Main Pool (ages 13 & up) and a Greenhouse add-on fee of $5.00. Children 12 and under pay $10.00, and under 2 years old get free admission.

Keep in mind, that you will need a reservation only for the Greenhouse and should not make a reservation for the Main pool before entering it.

Cottonwood Hot Springs Inn & Spa

Another favorite Colorado hot spring is Cottonwood Hot Springs, near Buena Vista. You will find this place in a high mountain natural ecosystem area of the majestic Collegiate Peaks Range, bordered by Cottonwood Creek and surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest.

This paradise is 5.5 miles west of the picturesque town of Buena Vista and about 2.5 hours drive from Denver.

Soak in Colorado’s purest, geothermal, gravity-fed mineral waters. Historically noted for their medicinal and therapeutic value, the springs were used for centuries by the Ute Indians as a spiritual gathering place.

Stay for the night

On the other hand, Cottonwood offers a good lodging option with rooms, cabins, tent sites, and dormitories. The first time we went there, we stayed in a double room in one of their shared houses, Terra Verde. It was a 5-bedroom beautiful house, located 1.5 miles down the road from the pools. Unlimited access to the hot springs is included in the room rate, which we used wisely 🙂

Cottonwood Creek is passing through the resort. You can hang out there on the provided chairs and tables.

Hot, Hot & Sulphur - Hot Sulphur Springs near Granby

Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa is located 97 miles northwest of Denver, in the small town of Hot Sulphur Springs. It offers several hot pools spread throughout the property. You can also stay at their lodge for the night and relax.

Admission: $20.00 per person
Open daily 8 AM – 10 PM
Reservations are not required.

2 – hour sessions for the hot spring pools are no longer in effect. This means that the guests can enjoy the facility without any time limitations.

Outside food, drink, and alcohol is not allowed.

Iron Mountain Hot Springs by Colorado River

A fantastic place to relax and soak in Colorado is Iron Mountain Hot Springs. You could find them in the picturesque town of Glenwood Springs, 158 miles west of Denver. Their pools are right next to the Colorado River and offer lovely views of the mountains

Sixteen geothermal pools offer guests a pure soaking experience. Additionally, there is a freshwater family pool, which is more relaxed and ideal for all ages.

Iron Mountain Hot Springs pools range from a warm 98°F to a toasty 108°F (37 – 42°C).

The pools are open year-round and, of course, a visit in the winter months is unforgettable.

Admission: Pricing will be $28.00 per 2.5-hour visit from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for adults and children 3 and over. Pricing will be $30.00 per 2.5-hour visit from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. for adults and children 3 and over.

Re-entry is not permitted.
Lockers in Bathhouse are available for $2.

The town of Glenwood Hot Springs has to offer one more lovely place for relaxation and soaking – Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. We have been there two times, and the whole experience was unforgettable.

As one of the oldest and most iconic tourist attractions in Colorado, this place has been welcoming visitors for over 130 years. The mineral-rich water of the world’s largest hot springs pool soothes the body and the soul.

The closest place to soak near Denver - Indian Hot Springs

Indian Hot Springs is only a 40-minute drive on I-70 West from Denver. It is the perfect getaway place for a day.

Located in the small town of Idaho Hot Springs, the complex offers a large mineral swimming pool, geothermal caves, outdoor jacuzzis, indoor private baths, and a mudroom. You should check it out!

Indian Hot Springs Details

The swimming pool is continually fed with hot mineral water at 115°. With an average temperature of 90° to 100°, this pool is a favorite for adults and children of all ages.

Open daily from 9.00 until 10.00 pm all year round.

No reservations are required.

$21.00 per person – Friday – Sunday & Holidays

They ask you to limit your time to 2 hours on weekends.
No food, no glass, and no coolers are permitted.

Geo-Thermal Caves

The caves were driven into the solid rock mountainside, between 1903 and 1911, mainly to create this unique facility. Each one has several huge sunken, walk-in hot tubs, filled with naturally hot mineral water at temperatures from 108° to 112°.

Caves are gender-specific (for example male and female), and bathing suits are optional.

Open from 7.30 am to 10.30 pm year-round.

No reservations are required.

*You must be 18 years of age or older to use the caves

There are also outdoor jacuzzis, a mudroom, and indoor private baths available to book. Check their website for more information.

FREE Springs close to Carbondale - Penny Hot Springs

Last summer, we found these beautiful Penny Hot Springs on Crystal River. You can check them on CO-133 S road, 12.8 miles south of Carbondale, left-hand side of the road. And they are FREE.

Indeed, some nice people developed the place, put stones, and made small pools for soaking. We tried them and it was awesome! Just on the edge, is Crystal River with its cold waters, for some refresh.

Day Hike to St. Mary's Glacier from Denver

St Mary’s Glacier is the perfect place for a day hike. It is one hour west from Denver, near Idaho Springs, Colorado. The short 1.5 miles round trip to the glacier and back is an easy to moderate level, and it’s suitable for families.

The trailhead leads to stunning panoramic views of St. Mary’s Lake. You can try to swim in the cold waters, paddle on it, or just enjoy it from the shore.

Going further up, you’ll reach St. Mary’s Glacier – a massive all-year-round snow formation. Here, you can take some amazing photos from above, get a picnic, or try skiing/snowboarding.

Is Saint Mary's Glacier really a glacier?

The short answer is No. St. Mary’s Glacier a semi-permanent snow formation, according to many experts.

Because there’s no ice in motion on Saint Mary’s Glacier, it’s actually considered a snowfield, which means it won’t be making any new mountains or valleys anytime soon.

However, it is a gorgeous place to be and totally worth the hike.

What is the best time to visit Saint Mary's Glacier?

St. Mary’s Glacier is opened all year round. However, the best time to visit is between late May and October (less or no snow on the trail). The peak months for visitors are July and August because the temperatures are the highest.

Keep in mind you are going 11, 236 feet above sea level. Therefore, expect fast change of the weather and unexpected rain/snow and wind. We recommend taking a rainproof jacket in your backpack.

For example, when we hiked to the glacier in August, firstly, it was a beautiful sunny day, with a blue sky. One hour later, scattered clouds, rain, and a strong wind came, and we were almost running on our way down.

How to Get to St. Mary's Glacier Trailhead?

Directions from Denver on Google Maps

The St Mary’s Glacier Trailhead is located 9.2 miles north of I-70 on SR 275 (Fall River Road). From I-70, take exit #238 for St Mary’s – Alice – Fall River Road. From the exit ramp, turn north on CR 275 and drive 9.2 miles to the St Mary’s Glacier Trailhead on the left (west) side of the road.

Parking at St. Mary's Glacier - Increased from $5 to $20 Cash

Parking along Country Road 275 (Fall River Road) is illegal. Fines, towing, and booting are possible consequences for improperly parked cars.

There are two parking lots on both sides of the trailhead. Previously, the fee per vehicle to park there was $5. As of mid-December 2022, it increased to $20 cash only per vehicle for 24 hours. It is a little pricy but still worth the visit. You should display the permit on your windshield. I advise you to bring a pen to fill in the car’s information on it.

You can find toilets in the parking lots.

Hiking to St. Mary's Lake

The first part of the hike is reaching Saint Mary’s Lake. The trail is rocky, so be careful to not slip and fall. You’ll pass through a beautiful pine forest. There are not many signs, so follow the path and the small stream.

Swim, Paddle, Go Fishing at Saint Mary's Lake, Idaho Springs

Once you reach the lake, you will be stunned by the spectacular view of it and the glacier behind it. As with all high-alpine lakes, the water is crystally clear.

There are a few things to see and do at Saint Mary’s Lake.

Swimming

You can try swimming in the cold waters. We saw a few enthusiasts also jumping from a cliff over the lake.

Kayaking

Some people paddle on the lake with inflatable kayaks or paddleboards. This would be an incredible activity to try the next time we visit this marvelous place.

Fishing

Fishing is allowed with a valid state permit only on the north side of the lake. Keep in mind that you’ll pass through private lands, so respect it.

Hiking to the top of St. Mary's Glacier

Continue to walk on the right side of the lake to get to the path leading to the snow mass. You don’t need to get too far to see the gorgeous views from above.

What to see and do once you reach the glacier?

Enjoy the view from the top

Once you reach the “base” of the glacier, turn around and check the view. You will be stunned by the beautiful St Mary’s Lake below and James Peak on your left.

Try skiing or snowboarding on the glacier

Do you like skiing or snowboarding? Get your equipment on your back and hike with it to the top of the Saint Mary’s Glacier. It is a short-distance slide but totally worth the effort.

Spending a Birthday in Colorado? Try White Water Rafting at Royal Gorge Bridge

For my birthday, we decided to go rafting and camping at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, Colorado. My present was crazy White Water Rafting on the Arkansas River, gorgeous views at sunset, camping at KOA under the stars, and walking on the highest suspension bridge in the USA. Not a bad birthday at all!

Royal Gorge - The Highest Suspension Bridge in the USA

Royal Gorge Bridge is the highest suspension bridge in the United States. It is 956 feet above sea-level.

It is located 130 miles Southwest of Denver and 60 miles from Colorado Springs. There is an amusement park around it, full of activities and attractions for the whole family. You can easily spend a day or two there. The closest town, Cañon City, is 14 miles away.

The views from the bridge are amazing. It is worth stepping on it and crossing to the other side. This is a wonderful place to come for a weekend trip. It is only 2.5 hours drive from Denver.

Some Facts About The Bridge

In 1929, the world’s highest suspension bridge was constructed — The Royal Gorge Bridge.

It was built in 7 months, with an original cost of $350,000 and $100,000 over budget. Today, it would equivocate to about $20 million.

Royal Gorge was the world’s highest bridge until 2001 when Liuguanghe Bridge in China surpassed it, to become the new highest bridge (temporary), with a deck height of 974 ft (297 m).

As of 2020, the Royal Gorge Bridge is among the 25 highest bridges in the world and remains the highest bridge in the United States.

It is also famous as America’s Bridge, symbolic meaning.

The bridge is 1,260 feet long and 18 feet wide.

There was a fire around the park, back in 2013, and the whole place was temporarily closed for more than a year. A grand reopening ceremony took place on May 8, 2015, after the completion of $30 million in repairs and building new attractions.

How to Get to Royal Gorge Bridge and Park from Denver?

Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is located at Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, 4218 Co Rd 3A, Cañon City, CO 81212. Two roads go from Denver to Canon City, CO, which is the closest town to the park.

The fastest way is through I-25 S and then take CO-115 S Road.

The slower, but the more beautiful, option is to drive through US Hwy 285 S and CO-9. It is a 30-miles longer route, but you pass through a National Forest, and it’s much more pleasant than I-25. If you have more time, I recommend choosing the second road on your GPS app.

The feeling of surviving the rafting, without falling, is glamorous! My legs were shaking after we came out of the boat, but I was so proud of myself!

Moreover, the site is not just any, but you go rafting on the Arkansas River, plus paddling in an impressive gorge, under the highest bridge. Amazing views along the way, mixed with a big portion of fun! Did we convince you to try it?

Is White Water Rafting Suitable for You? Check the Requirements

You should be physically healthy to perform white water rafting.

Swimming ability and a healthy fitness level are always recommended. Don’t worry, they will give you life vests, so you’ll be safe even if you can’t swim.

During the rafting trip, you will actively participate in the paddling, and should follow the guide’s instructions on how and when. Therefore, you should hear and understand what he’s saying.

Rafting is not for children, so the minimum age to participate is 13 years old.

There is some danger involved in this activity. However, like all adrenaline-based sports, you need to get out of your comfort zone and have fun!

We searched online and found Royal Gorge Bridge Rafting & Zipline Tours as the best rafting company at Cañon City. They have tons of reviews from happy customers and offer professional services and tours at great prices.

A half-day world-class white water rafting trip on Royal Gorge starts at $129 per person, before taxes. It is with 3 hours duration. This is what we tried and we loved it!

A full day adventure on Arkansas River starts from $239 per person, and will last about 6 hours.

Why to Choose Royal Gorge Bridge Rafting & Zipline Tours?

Royal Gorge Bridge Rafting & Zipline Tours offer a half-day and full-day rafting trips at Class III, IV, and V on Arkansas River.

Additionally, they have an easier rafting trip, called Bighorn Sheep Canyon Rafting. It is suitable for families and smaller children.

The rafting tours are at 8 am and 12:30 pm. In July and August, they have extra windows at 10 am and 2:30 pm. You should call or book online in advance as it’s a very popular activity and spots are limited. Go to the office a little bit earlier to check-in and sign the waiver.

White Water Rafting Trip on Arkansas River

The duration of the whole rafting is around 2.5 hrs. The starting point is the company’s office. After short instructions from the guides, all participants get on a bus that goes to the Arkansas River’s shore.

Once the boats are inflated and ready, you sit in one of them with 3 more tourists and the assigned guide. Ivan and I were together with two lovely girls from another part of Colorado. Three of us screamed as it was our last minute on Earth. Poor Ivan!

However, you go down on the Arkansas River where you pass fast rapids and paddle under Royal Gorge Bridge. It is an amazing experience!

During this time, there are 2 men with kayaks, which are paddling around the boats. Their job is to take photos and help people, in case someone falls.

The whole paddling is about an hour and something. There are slow times and more exciting ones where you should follow the guide’s instructions.

While we were paddling in calm waters, our guide explained to us about the nearby nature, architecture, and some history of the place.

The trip finishes at Cañon City where the bus is waiting to drive you back to the office.

After the rafting trip, you can see your photos in the nearby White Water Bar & Grill, and purchase the album online, like we did. The photos are high quality and catch the best moments in the water. You pay for the album on their website and then have access to a link with all photos.

How to Dress & What to Bring for Rafting?

Keep in mind that you’ll go rafting in the summer months, so a swimwear or shorts and a t-shirt are fine. The rafting company provides wet suits, but you’ll still get wet under it. Therefore, bring a pair of dry clothes to change after the rafting. There are toilets next to the office where you can change.

There is also free parking for your car. Leave your valuables in the car’s trunk. We took only the Go Pro camera with us. There is an option to give your car’s key to the front desk lady, so use it.

Camping at Royal Gorge Bridge

We slept 2 nights in a tent at KOA Campground Royal Gorge Bridge. It is 4 miles from the entrance of the park and 10 miles from Cañon City. The campground has a wonderful location and amenities. Check their website KOA.com for availability and reservations.

KOA Campgrounds - Amenities and Why We Love Them

Kampgrounds of America (KOA) is our favorite private campground company in the USA. They have tents and RV spots, plus a few cozy cabins.

Their campgrounds are always nice and clean, and the customer service is the best!

KOA provides all amenities you would need for a wonderful stay – toilets, hot showers, laundry machines, children’s playgrounds, a mini-golf playground, pool, pool slide, gift store.

Besides, each camping spot has a table, a bench, a parking spot for your car, and a fire ring.

*When we visited in June 2020, part of these amenities (the pool, mini-golf) were closed due to pandemic regulations. Check their website for more information.

We’ve slept in a few KOA campgrounds so far, and all of them have been wonderful.

Our Kazoo Tent Survived A Storm

It was a quiet afternoon, hot and sunny. We just got back to the campground from our rafting trip and lunch after.

Out of nothing, a strong wind appeared and started messing around. Ten minutes later, a heavy rainstorm hit us.

Thankfully, we were there and managed to secure our tent with extra ropes. This was our first camping with the new purchase, and let me tell you, it proved its price and survived without (almost) any damages.

That wasn’t the situation with the other tents nearby. Most of them were larger and higher than ours and the winds started blowing them away. Unfortunately, their owners weren’t at the campground at that moment.

My boy was there to save the day, and, together with another camper, put big stones over the tents, to keep them on the ground.

The whole storm lasted about 30 minutes, but during this time, we fought with nature to save our and neighbors’ tents. What an experience we had!

Where to eat near Royal Gorge Bridge, Cañon City

After we finished successfully with the rafting trip, Ivan and I decided to celebrate it. We stopped for a beer at the nearby White Water Bar & Grill. It is the place where you can watch a slideshow with your rafting photos while having lunch. The bar belongs to the same owner, and it’s on the opposite side of the tour office.

However, it offers full service and a large menu of meals and drinks. We tried their Green Chilly Soup, and it was delicious!

White Water Bar has a beautiful courtyard and a patio where you may enjoy your drink and play games, such as beach volleyball. Just chill out.

A secret spot to watch the sunset over Royal Gorge Bridge

Our secret spot for watching the sunset over the Royal Gorge Bridge is not secret at all. You need to go to the Outlook Point at Royal Gorge Mountain Park, which is above the main entrance for the bridge.

Just continue driving up on County Road 3A until you reach a parking lot and a small roundabout on the top.

There are many trees, and you may not see the bridge directly from your car. Get out of the car and walk a little bit between the trees, until you reach the rocks. Once you are at the rocks, look right. You should be able to see the bridge and the canyon from there.

It’s a spectacular view, isn’t it?

What to See and Do at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, CO - Attractions

From walking the Royal Gorge to trying the Skycoaster, the Gondola, and ZipLine over Arkansas River, there are many fun things to do at and around the bridge and a 360-acre amusement park.

Moreover, you can have lunch with a view on the other side and even listen to a free concert. Explore around, a lot to be seen.

The park is open daily from 10 am to 7 pm.

How Much Does It Cost to Cross the Royal Gorge Bridge?

It costs $32 (ages 12 & up) to cross the bridge and to use a gondola on your way back (if weather permits). Children under 12 will pay $27, and these under 2 years old have free admission, however, a ticket is still required. You need to pay extra fees if you want to try the attractions on the other side.

This is the General Admission for the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. Tickets are not for a specific day. They can be used up to one year from date of purchase and can be validated for a FREE next day return.

General Admission includes access to America’s Bridge, Aerial Gondola’s, the Plaza Theater, the Children’s Playland, and Spectacular views of the Royal Gorge.

Zipline, Skycoaster, and Via Ferrata are extra pay experiences.

Purchase your tickets online to save money, and pass the queue faster.

All rides are subject to weather closures. They do not refund for Gondola Closures. For example, when we visited the bridge, it was very windy, and they closed the gondola under our noses. We were very disappointed, but couldn’t do anything about it and walked back.

Attractions at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, CO

We visited the park on Sunday afternoon, and it was crowded with people. There were huge queues for all attractions, so we decided to skip them for the next time.

However, I prepared some useful information about the Gondola, Skycoaster, and the Zip Line, which you may find useful.

IMPORTANT: You must purchase a general admission ticket for the Royal Gorge Bridge to access the attractions on the other side.

Age, Weight & Height restrictions apply to the rides, and you sign a waiver before riding. All extra pay attractions are weather permitting only.

The Gondola - Your Go Back Transport at Royal Gorge

Be prepared for an awesome ride in the sky!

The Aerial Gondola ride is included in the General Admission ticket, and guests can ride it an unlimited amount of times during their visit to the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park.

Additionally, you can take your dog in the cabin with you if he’s leashed and friendly.

This attraction is handicap accessible for wheelchairs no wider than 30 inches. There is no handicap ramp on the South platform, so you may want to ride the gondola round trip then take the paved path to the bridge.

The Gondola opens at 10 am daily.

The ride is open year-round and it’s weather permitting. Strong winds and lightning may affect the operation of the attraction and the gondolas can close temporarily for the safety of the guests.

Free next-day admission is available by having your tickets validated at the ticket counter before you leave.

The Skycoaster - A Swing Over The Gorge

The Skycoaster is a huge swing on the edge of the gorge. It looks like an unforgettable experience and a lot of fun. One to three people can go per ride. It costs $38 for a single rider, $66 for two riders, and $87 for three riders.

This thrilling experience doesn’t have the title of the World’s Scariest Skycoaster for nothing.

“Riders are hoisted up to the top of a 100-foot tower and will encounter views unlike any other from this vantage point. Once the adrenaline is pumping, the ride operator will shout 3-2-1, and riders will be off for the flight of their life! Speeds can reach up to 50 miles per hour and guests will be extended 1,200 feet over the edge of the Royal Gorge”.

All Royal Rush Skycoaster Riders Must Be 42”-82” tall. There is no weight requirement for this attraction, if the flight suit fits, you can fly.

For small children, flight suits will be tried on to determine ride eligibility.

This attraction is weather dependent and can close temporarily for the safety of the guests.

Unfortunately, they don’t allow you to take your GoPro camera on this ride.

The Zip Line over Arkansas River

Fly through the air 1,200 feet above the roaring Arkansas River on America’s Highest Zip Line!

The Cloudscraper Zip Line is on the south side of the Royal Gorge Bridge. The admission is $48 per person. It looks like a very fun thing to do and worth the price. Again, we didn’t get to the attractions, because there were too many people that day. However, I want to come back to the park and try the Cloudscraper Zip Line next time.

Requirements for Cloudscraper Zip Line Riders:

10+ years of age
Weigh between 100-245 pounds – Wind can change the weight requirements on this ride. Confirm current weight restrictions before purchasing a ticket.
Between 48″-82″ tall
Children ages 10-16 must have an adult on-site at the park.

Attractions Packages - Combine Rides & Save Money

There are available packages for the attractions at Royal Gorge Bridge and Park that can save you money. For example, you can get a ride package ticket for $75, including 1 Zipline Ride, and 1 Skycoaster One Rider. You will save $11 this way.

10 More Things to See & Do at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park Besides The Rides

Besides walking the bridge and riding the attractions, there are at least 10 more things to see and do on both sides of the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. Here is our list:

Check the Visitor Center for amazing views and a gift shop. Enjoy a cup of coffee.
Explore the Water Clock behind the Visitor Center – one of the rarest clocks on Earth.

Listen to a free rock/country concert at a stage.
Make a picnic with a view – both sides.
Have a meal and a drink at the restaurant on the South side.
Eat an ice-cream from the local stand.
Take beautiful photos from the Lookout Point, next to the Skycoaster.
Go to the Plaza Theater and learn more about the history of this place.
Bring your children to Tommy Knocker Playland.
Watch how the Royal Gorge Train pass below the bridge.

Get on a train under the bridge - Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Another fun activity near the Royal Gorge Bridge is taking the famous train for a beautiful trip in the middle of the gorge.

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad offers daily departures at 9:00 am, 12:30 pm, and 3:30 pm, with 6:30 pm departures on weekends.

The scenic trip lasts about two hours and starts at Canon City Railroad Station. The price depends on what type of wagon you will choose to experience – Coach Class, Vista Dome, or Club Class.

The company also offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner train packages where you’ll try delicious meals and drinks while watching the views. Get on the train Christmas time for a meeting with Santa!

The cheapest ticket to get on Royal Gorge Railroad Route is $89 per adult for the Coach class. The child ticket is $84 (ages 2-12).

Make sure to reserve tickets online early in advance because seats are selling very fast.

In conclusion, I had an amazing birthday at the Royal Gorge Bridge Area. It is a wonderful place to spend a few days with your family.

In summer months, go on an adventure and experience the white water rafting. Spend a night at the nearby KOA camping. Walk on the highest suspension bridge and try all attractions there. Watch the sunset from Outlook point or hop on Royal Gorge Route train for an incredible lunch with a view. You won’t regret trying any of these!

Traveling with a backpack could be a lot of fun if you know how to pack minimally, and what to bring along the way. We traveled around the world for 7 months and can tell you from our experience which travel essentials to take with you and which to leave at home. Backpacks We Use

A Backpack as a Carry-on

If you are traveling only with a backpack as a carry-on, then this would be your most important purchase, along with a good pair of hiking shoes. You will carry it with you everywhere, and it will keep your values safe, secure, and dry.

You should feel comfortable and happy when carrying your backpack on your back for extended periods. Therefore, it is important to choose a good one, with extra support for your back. You may spend more money now, but trust us, you will thank yourself later.

We recommend you to buy a 30 – 46 l backpack if you want to take it with you as a carry-on bag on the plane.

Osprey Porter 46 Travel Backpack

For instance, I (Dani) purchased my Osprey Porter 46 L Backpack from Amazon back in 2017. Since then, I’ve traveled to 9 countries with it. All the time, I take it with me on the plane, because it is within the measurements for most air companies.

In conclusion, it is 46L, big enough to put everything you need, either going camping for the weekend or traveling for 7 months. You can also fly it on aircraft as a piece of carry-on luggage. Check it online here.

Backpacks from Cabela's

On the other hand, Ivan bought his awesome backpack from Cabela’s store, back in 2017. The model is Cabela’s Endicott, 45 liters. He is very satisfied with this purchase and has been actively using the backpack to travel the world.

Small Daypack | Hike Backpack

Additionally to the main backpack, we recommend you also purchasing a smaller daypack for your local explorations, or to use it as a laptop/camera bag. If you are going, for example, on a day trip, you can bring only the smaller backpack with you, instead of taking the whole luggage.

For instance, you will use it when exploring places, to put everything you may need for the day – a bottle of water, some snacks, a rain jacket, documents/purse, a camera, extra batteries, etc.

Another way is to store all of your electronics and valuables in it when flying on planes. Likewise, we always put our laptops, cameras, and external drives in our day backpacks when we’re flying.

Waterproof Backpack Rain Cover

Some of the backpacks are waterproof, water-resistant, or come with a waterproof cover in the package.

However, most of them don’t. A waterproof rain cover for your backpack is a product you should have if you consider backpacking.

For example, when we were traveling in Asia, the backpacks’ rain covers saved our bags countless times as it was occasionally raining here and there. Additionally, we used them to protect our packs from getting dirty when traveling by buses.

In conclusion, consider buying one, it’s cheap and very useful in bad weather. Plus, it doesn’t take much space.

Hiking, Training Shoes and Travel Sandals

Hiking Shoes

As I mentioned, if you plan to travel for an extended period, the second most important purchase would be a good pair of hiking shoes. They should be comfortable, light-weighted, with a steady platform, and good ankle support. Preferably, the shoes should be also waterproof.

You can find many companies on the market producing high-quality boots. Some of the names we love and recommend are Merrell, Columbia, and Salomon.

Recently, I bought new Merrell Women’s Moab 2 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots. I’ve been very happy with my purchase so far! On my first time wearing these boots, I hiked 15 km with them and didn’t have any problems.

Merrell Moab 2 Hiking Boots are also #1 Best Selling Women Hiking Shoes on Amazon, so if you need a pair of awesome hiking shoes, Merrell’s would be a great choice!

On the other hand, Ivan wears Columbia Men’s Newton Ridge. His boots are also waterproof, breathable, and with high-traction grip, perfect for hiking.

Training Shoes

Don’t forget to stay fit on the road. It doesn’t matter if there is a gym nearby or not, you should keep yourself busy and find ways to exercise in nature.

For this purpose, we recommend you add a pair of training running shoes in your backpack. You can use them not only for exercising and running but also for walking tours and hiking easy trails.

The second pair of shoes that you can find in both of our backpacks are Nike Running Shoes. We love them and have been using their products for several years.

Tourist Sandals

Besides hiking shoes, each one of us also got a pair of sport tourist sandals, when we were preparing for our backpacking trip in Singapore.

If you are heading to warm places, you should include a pair of tourist travel sandals in your bag. You can walk a lot with them without feeling your legs tired afterward. Moreover, your feet will breathe!

Tourist sandals are an excellent choice also for camping, fishing, rafting, and kayaking.

Sandals for Her

In June, I bought Bare Traps Women Sandals which I love. They have memory foam platform and are super comfortable for walking long distances. I also use them when I go kayaking or fishing.

Sandals for Him

Recently, Ivan purchased a pair of Blue Chaco Men’s Z1 Classic Sport Sandals. He’s been wearing them all the time in his daily life and when going outdoors – camping, fishing, hiking, etc, and he’s very satisfied with this product. Travel Apparel and Tips for Packing

When packing clothes for your trip, consider three very important questions I’ve been asking myself every time:

Do I indeed need this piece of a dress/leggings/a shirt in my bag?
Is it suitable for the activities I plan to do?
Can I combine it with other clothes in my backpack?

If you answered YES to these questions, then probably you should add the chosen piece in your bag.

Meanwhile, check some more dos and don’ts in packing:

Tips for Packing

– Take with you only light-weighted fabrics. Most cotton clothes are heavy and dry slower, so avoid them. Avoid any leather apparel because it’s heavy.

– Choose bottoms that can be easily combined with all of your tops, and vice versa. We advise you to avoid jeans and recommend you bring leggings and sport types of pants. I love dresses too!

– Bring at least one long-sleeved blouse for cold days and nights. Consider also taking a rainproof jacket.

– Again, don’t pack too many clothes. Probably, you won’t wear them all. Trust me on this! You may want to buy clothes from the place you’re visiting, so leave some space in your bag for purchases along the road.

As a general rule, bring two of each kind and you’ll be just fine. For example, pack 2 t-shirts, 2 tops (or 4-5 shirts), 2 pairs of leggings, 2 dresses, 2 multi-use pants, etc.

– Use packing cubes and vacuum bags to free some space in your bag, and to organize your luggage.

– Roll your clothes instead of folding them. This way, you’ll save more space in your backpack or suitcase.

Try to travel minimally

We washed our clothes in the hostels or used local public laundry services every week. This way, we traveled with a minimal amount of apparel that could be easily combined and even washed together. Try to do the same when backpacking for extended periods.

Rainproof Light Jacket

If you are heading to a destination that has a usual amount of rain, a rainproof lighted jacket is must-have apparel in your backpack. It will save you when it is raining, plus you can use it on cold nights out, or hikes in mountains.
I’ve been using Salomon Women Waterproof Jacket since the spring of 2019. Ivan, on the other hand, wears a waterproof Peter Storm jacket, purchased from Scotland.

Waterproof Rain Over Pants

Waterproof rain over pants is the ones you put over your main trousers when it’s raining, to protect yourself from getting wet.

These pants are great for hikes and walk in nature, and don’t take much space in your backpack.

Whether you need a pair for yourself depends where you are heading and what you’ll do there.

For instance, we didn’t have rainproof pants when we traveled around the world. I see it now as a mistake because we would use them the few times we were hiking and it was pouring from the sky.

In 2019, we found them in an outdoor store in Glasgow and decided to give it a try. Since then, we’ve been using our waterproof pants actively when we go hiking and it starts raining.

Leggings & Pants for Traveling

As I mentioned before, avoid taking jeans with you. They are heavy and dry very slowly.

Instead, take some leggings (for ladies) or travel pants. If you are heading to a warm place, a few pairs of shorts will also do the work.

However, if you are going to a destination where the temperatures are occasionally falling down, I recommend you purchasing Under Armour Leggings. I’ve been using their products for several years and I am very satisfied with the quality of the apparel.

Shirts, Dresses, and Tops

For our honeymoon trip, Ivan packed two t-shirts and three shirts. Additionally, he also got one long-sleeve shirt and a sweater.

I got two t-shirts, two other tops, one dress, a thermal blouse, and a sweater.

All of our tops could be combined with our bottoms.

Lingerie & Swim Wear

Each of us brought a pair of swimsuit. We were traveling minimally, otherwise, I’d take two swimsuits when going to a beach place.

Regarding the lingerie and socks numbers, each of us brought five pairs of socks and five pairs of underwear when we were backpacking. I got one sport style, plus two more t-shirt styles bras. You don’t need more than this.

Luggage Organizers & Compression Bags for Traveling

Organize Luggage with Packing Cubes

We’ve been using luggage organizers – packing cubes for a few years. They’re great for putting everything in place and store your items separately. We purchased TravelWise Packing Cube System – Durable 5 Piece Weekender Luggage Organizer Set from Amazon three years ago. It comes in 5 pieces with different sizes.

For example, I use the smallest one to store all electronics, cables, drives, and cameras. I have quick access to them and keeps everything together.

On the other hand, the Middle size organizers are perfect for packing smaller apparel and lingerie. It’s better to roll your clothes to save more space in your bag.

Additionally, the two Large size packing cubes are perfect for organizing your top apparel like shirts, dresses, and jackets.

The organizers are breathable, durable, and lightweight, perfect for backpacking.

Save Space in Your Backpack with Vacuum Compression Bags

This is one of the products we use all the time. Compression Packing Bags are perfect for traveling because they save a ton of space in your backpack/suitcase.

One way to use the bags is with a vacuum machine that removes the air from it. Another option is to find rolling travel compression bags where you simply put your clothes in it and then start rolling the bag until the air gets out. That’s the type we’ve been using when backpacking. Ivan and I organize our clothes in different packing bags, depending on where we are going.

When not traveling, we use the vacuum compression bags to store clothes at home, especially the winter ones which, otherwise, take much more space in our closet.

Travel Cosmetics, Essential Oils & Medicine

Bath Time - Products We Use While Traveling

Dry Shampoo Nuts This is a dry shampoo made from nuts. You simply mix some of it with water and you’ll have a creamy mixture for your hair. It doesn’t take much space in your bag + it’s an Eco-friendly product.
Solid Shampoo Bars We love them! Dry Shampoo Bars are solid pieces that don’t take much space and last long. You can use them for the whole body and don’t need to worry about the requirement for liquids in your carry-on. Explore some cool companies producing shampoo bars.
Shampoo and a Conditioner in 100 ml containers When we travel with a carry on only, we use our reusable 100 ml plastic travel bottles to pour in them some shampoo, a conditioner, and face cream for our trips. That way, we can use them immediately after we arrive at our accommodation, and buy more cosmetics later.

Face cream / Body Lotion Moisture is important for your skin, especially when you are visiting a hot and dry place. We always carry a travel-size body lotion or a face cream in our bag. Keep in mind, the air in planes is extremely dry, so it’s good for your face skin to apply cream before the flight.
Toothpaste and a bamboo toothbrush Your toothpaste should be 100 ml or less, in order to take it in your backpack. The toothbrushes we use are made from bamboo, instead of plastic, and are Eco-friendly.

Microfiber towels - Save Space in Your Bag

Microfiber towels are perfect for traveling and backpacking. They are lightweight, ultra-compact, and take much less space than regular towels.

Furthermore, these towels are super absorbent, fast-drying, and antibacterial. They’re soft and hypoallergenic. Shop a pack of 3 microfiber towels at the price of one on Amazon.

Alternative Medicine from Nature - Essential Oils and More

Essential Oils

Essential Oils can be used for aromatherapy, steam inhalations, skincare, massages, natural perfumery, baths, hair care, saunas, air freshening, compresses, vaporization, chakra balancing, or to enhance shampoos, lotions, creams, and soaps.

Similarly, they take a big part in our cosmetics/medicine bundle. We use them for cosmetics purposes, massages, aromatherapy, and breathing techniques. The oils also help to heal our bodies when we have physical pain. You need to apply a drop or two of it on your skin and leave it to work its magic.

Usually, the essential oils come in small 30 ml or 10 ml bottles, a perfect size for traveling. You can easily find bundles online. Keep in mind that you don’t need to take all of your bottles with you. Choose a few that would help you and add them to your cosmetics bag.

The main oils that Ivan and I use and recommend are:

Peppermint Oil
Lavender Oil
Jasmine Oil
Tea Tree Oil
Lemongrass Oil

Buy and Eat Local Honey

If you are going to travel more than a few days in a new country, we recommend you buy a jar of local organic raw honey and eat a spoon or two of it every day. It is important to get honey locally because it contains the necessary ingredients that will help your body to fight against the viruses or bacterias at this place.

Honey is one of the superfoods we’ve been eating during our 7-month journey around the world. It boosts your immune system and keeps you healthy and strong.

Be advised that you can’t transport honey in your carry-on luggage, even if it’s a small jar, because it is considered an animal product. For example, we bought a jar of delicious honey from Thailand and tried to get it with us on the plane to New Zealand. Unfortunately, the officers removed it from our bag because of this.

Vitamins & Probiotics

Before going to Asia, we were taking probiotics every day for two weeks, and continue taking them for two more weeks when we landed there. If you are traveling locally, you don’t need to take probiotics. If you are heading to a far destination, different as a climate and food from yours, we advise you to take some probiotics before that.

Regarding the vitamins, Ivan doesn’t take any vitamins, only supplements of protein powder. I take vitamin C and B12 every now and then. When we were traveling for 7 months, I was taking women multivitamins which had all the necessary vitamins and minerals for my body.

Make-up when traveling

I like and have been using Maybelline Products for many years. In my backpack, you can find a black mascara, a creamy concealer, and a base foundation cream. There are a lipstick and a lip balm as well. You don’t need anything else.

As one friend told me once: “Your smile is your best makeup. But if you do want to put some, then all you need is a little bit of mascara!”

If you use makeup you know how important it is for the face skin to be cleaned daily. Add a pack of two Neutrogena makeup remover cleansing wet wipes to your backpack for easy skincare.

Eco-friendly Products for Your Backpack

Consider buying Eco-friendly and reusable products such as bamboo toothbrushes, canvas bags, and filter water bottles. Reduce the use of plastic products as much as you can, one toothbrush/ bottle/ bag at a time.

Change your plastic toothbrush with a 100 % biodegradable bamboo one and make a great impact on the environment. Plus, these toothbrushes have active charcoal-infused bristles and feel great when using them. Check them here.

Reusable Canvas Shopping Bag

Reduce the plastic bags and instead use a reusable canvas bag for multiple purposes – for shopping groceries, organizing your luggage, keeping dirty laundry separately, going to the beach, using it as a personal bag on the planes.

Travel Essentials when flying on a plane

Flying on a plane could be pretty anxious and tiring.

However, there are some travel accessories that could help you to have a better experience with flights. Check the following essentials we use and recommend when flying on a plane.

Travel Pillow, Sleeping Mask & Ear Plugs

A travel memory – foam pillow is a must-have accessory in your luggage if you are flying on an airplane for more than one hour. It will support your neck and head during the flight and you’ll get a much better experience. This pillow can provide extra support to protect the neck from pain when you are sitting in the seat on a plane for long time. Add a good travel pillow to your travel essentials’ list and take it with you on your next flight.

Additionally, on long flights, I also use a sleeping mask, plus a pair of earplugs if I don’t listen to music. You can easily find a bundle of a travel memory foam pillow, a sleeping mask, and earplugs online like these from Saireider and MLVOC.

Disinfecting Hand Sanitizer Gel and Wet Wipes for Traveling

Planes and airports are very dirty places, so consider taking a few packages of wet wipes in your backpack and a small hand sanitizer gel. You will use them a lot while traveling to your final destination to clean your hands, the table in front of you, the handles, etc.

With the recent news for the COVID-19 virus, you should have good protection and disinfection when flying on planes. That’s why when you’re shopping for disinfectants look for wet wipes that contain at least 70 % Ethyl Alcohol. They are more powerful against the virus than some alcohol-free wipes, for example.

The other option to clean your hands from germs while flying on a plane is to take a hand sanitizer gel up to 100 ml. Again, look for a product with at least 70 % Ethyl Alcohol in it.

Moisturizing Face Mask

The air on the airplanes is one of the driest possible. Therefore, I recommend you to take a travel-size moisturizing face mask in your carry on luggage, and to apply it on your face once you are on the plane. The mask paper sheet will hydrate your face skin and protect it from drying during the flight.

Good Headphones - Sony Products

Having good headphones is important when flying on a plane for a long time. You will use them to listen to music or a movie. Headphones also can be used as a noise-canceling accessory when you want to sleep in quiet. Therefore, consider taking a pair with headphones in your carry on bag.

It is important to choose a fast-speed memory card for your camera if you want to capture high-quality photos and/or videos.

You should consider buying one of these octopus-style flexible tripods for your cameras. You can use it with your phone, DSLR camera, and GoPro action camera.

The legs are flexible and can be easily attached to a variety of surfaces for a different point of view, especially for taking selfie photos. Plus, it comes with a remote control for distant shooting.

I’ve been using one of these tripods mainly with the GoPro camera and it works perfectly.

Sometimes, Ivan attaches his DSLR camera to the tripod and use it for taking landscape and night photos.

Recently, we bought a new external battery called Yelomin. The Power Bank is a solar charger with 20000mAh (can charge a few phones). It is a portable outdoor mobile power bank, perfect for traveling and backpacking. It has an external backup battery pack, dual USB 5V 1A/2A outputs, and a two led light flashlight with a compass. Laptops & Back Up Storage

MacBook Pro 13-inch

My favorite product in my backpack is my Mac Book Pro. It is a Mid-2012 model but still going strong. Recently, Ivan changed its Hard Drive with new Solid State Drive Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD and it’s been loading and running very fast ever since.

While traveling, we use the MacBook Pro for watching movies, back up the photos and videos we take, and later, edit the photos on the Adobe Lightroom program.

If you want an awesome laptop for your job, study, or while traveling, I recommend you to buy a MacBook Pro 13-inch Laptop. It is a perfect size laptop, with fast OS and many built-in features and programs.

Acer Chromebook R 13 Convertible Laptop and Tablet

We bought our Acer Chromebook R13 Convertible from New Zealand in 2018. Ivan and I were traveling only with the Macbook Pro and needed one more laptop for work and surfing online.

After careful research and many good reviews, I found this 32 GB Acer Chromebook 13.3 inch 2-in-1 laptop and a tablet. It could be easily converted and used in four different modes – Laptop, Display, Tent, or Pad.

As the name Chromebook says, this laptop-tablet works with Chrome OS which is very cool and easy to use. I like that it also has a built-in anti-virus system, it loads the programs and apps very fast, and it’s a very customer-oriented laptop and tablet (can use it in a vertical position as well).

Another thing I love about my Acer Chromebook R13 is that it also comes with some of the main Google Apps, including Google Play Store where I can find and download tons of games, apps, and movies.

This Acer Chromebook R13 laptop-tablet is perfect for traveling because it is very lightweight and its battery lasts 12+ hours.

External Storage for Photos & Videos

We can’t stress enough how important it is to have external storage device/s in which to keep copies of your travel content such as photos, videos, documents, etc.

Yes, there are online storage clouds for this purpose, but we still prefer to keep our photos and videos on a physical device offline as well.

Western Digital Portable External Drive

However, we’ve been using Western Digital (WD) Portable External Drives for several years now. Each one of us has one WD 1TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drive.

Additionally, we purchased a WD 4TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drive two months ago, to use it for Time Machine on my MacBook (when changed the hard drive with the SSD drive).

So far, we haven’t had any problems with our Western Digital external drive storage. We’ve been carrying them all around the world and using them actively as a back up for all of our photos and videos.

Don’t forget to buy also a hard-cover carrying case to protect your external drive from moisture and dropping.

Our advice is THE MORE BACK UP, THE BETTER! We keep our photos and videos in several places and make a back up of the backup, just in case one of the copies disappear or we don’t have access to it anymore.

Keep Your Drive Separately from Your Laptop! A story for an example

An important tip regarding external hard drives from personal experience: Keep them separately from your laptop. If you are making regular backups of your laptop folders and your work (documents, photos, videos), keep the external storage in a separate bag when traveling, or in a separate place at home.

Here is a funny story:

When we were traveling and hitchhiking on South Island, New Zealand we forgot my backpack in one car. This was the bag we had kept on one place my MacBook Pro and my external hard drive with all photos and videos from our trip so far. Thank God, the person whose car we forgot the backpack at is good, and returned it to us a few hours later.

After this accident, we started keeping the laptop and the external device in separate backpacks, just in case we lose one of the devices!

11 Reasons Why We Love Pai and Think it is Thailand's Paradise for Backpackers

Pai has become our favorite place in Thailand for a reason. It is a small, charming hippie town, up in the mountains, where you can easily spend a week or two exploring surrounding nature.

Here are a few more reasons why we loved Pai so much, and think it is Thailand’s backpacker’s paradise.

Reasons why you should visit Pai

It is a beautiful place to be. Pai is surrounded by gorgeous nature – mountains, waterfalls, caves, canyons, and even hot springs. There is a lovely river going through the town as well.
It has a very convenient location from Chiang Mai. You can easily plan and visit both places.
Pai is a cheap and affordable place to visit. Accommodation costs only a few dollars, a portion of a meal is less than a dollar. Most of the nearby attractions are free or low cost.

There are a lot of things to see and do around – explore the old buildings and temples, go inside Tham Nam Lod Caves on a bamboo canoe, hike Pai Canyon, swim in the waterfalls, or soak in the nearby hot springs, you name it!
It is not a crowded town if you don’t count the tourists. The permanent population is around 4 000 people.
There is almost no traffic on the streets and it is mostly from scooters. This also means Pai has cleaner air.
Did I mention the elephants? There are a few places around Pai where you can see and interact with these lovely animals.

The food in Pai is delicious. There are plenty of small places where you can taste local Thai cuisine.
Pai has nice weather almost a year around. Similarly to other places in Thailand, there are two seasons – dry and wet. I recommend you to visit Pai between November and March when it is the dry season.
Local people are very positive and accommodating. You will feel welcomed there.
It is a great place for Digital Nomads and Westerners – English is a widely speaking language, good WiFi connection, cheap hostels, late parties, and scooters to rent.

Where is Pai and How to Get There from Chiang Mai

The town is located in Northern Thailand, around 80 miles northwest from Chiang Mai. You can easily get there by public transport.

It is an option also to rent a scooter in Chiang Mai and ride to Pai, but I don’t recommend this, as the road is very steep, and you may easily fall when making a turn.

How to get there with a small van

Ivan and I bought tickets to Pai directly from the Arcade Bus Station at Chiang Mai. It cost us around $10 per person for a one-way journey with a small air-conditioned van. We used Prempracha Transport company.

You can also buy tickets to Pai online from the best website for booking transportation in Asia – 12GoAsia.com. We use it many times and found really good ticket deals.

The 3-hour trip was an exciting adventure by itself. There are 762 curves between Chiang Mai and Pai, so be prepared with a bag if you have a sensitive stomach.

Where to Sleep in Pai

Accommodation in Pai is variable from cheap hostels to more luxurious hotels and private cabins.

Because we were traveling on a budget in Asia, I chose to book a cheap private room at “Day Off Guesthouse.”

You can check our article for which websites we use when booking cheap accommodation online.

However, this place was right next to a bar, which was a problem for us at night. In general, we are OK with loud parties, but at that time, we just needed some rest.

After one night staying there, Ivan and I decided to move to other accommodation which was more quiet and peaceful.

Our second place was a lovely private cabin at Rainbow House Pai, less than a mile from the center. It was a very nice and clean place, so definitely check it as an option if you plan to stay in Pai.

Where to Eat - Street Food & Local Restaurants

Street Food Vendors

As with all Southeast Asia countries, street food is the BEST food. It is freshly made, delicious, and cheap. While we were in Pai, we ate a couple of times on the Main Walking Street, plus visited the Night food market and a few local restaurants.

Evening time is a great time to go out and try the local BBQ – the famous chicken satay. You can find everywhere homemade Pad Thai and Curry meat with rice as well. Wherever you travel in Thailand, don’t miss to taste also Tom Yum Noodles Soup and Khao Soi.

Night Food Market

Similarly to our visit to Singapore, we tried the meals at one of the local food markets. It is called Pai Night Market and it isn’t very far from the main tourist street.

The market opens every night at 6 PM local time and closes at 10 PM. If you want to engage with locals and try delicious food, you should visit this place. The address from Google is Pai Night Market, Rural Rd Mae Hong Son 4024, Wiang Tai, Pai District, Mae Hong Son 58130, Thailand.

Local Restaurants

On the other hand, we also ate a few times from the same local restaurant. Don’t remember the name but it is located across the street from the Police station, right on the corner. This place is offering delicious local meals, in big portions, for 30-35 Bah each, which is around $1.

Overall, you can find many options where to eat deliciously in Pai, so don’t be afraid to explore and try new dishes from various vendors.

You will be surprised how good is their street food, made-to-order in front of your eyes. We can’t describe with words how much we loved the local food in Pai.

Where and How to Rent a Scooter in Pai

Where to find a scooter for rent?

There are a few places you can rent a scooter in Pai, mainly on the walking street. We used Vespai Rental to get a motorbike, and we recommend you using their services. We received great customer service and a scooter without any problems. It cost us around $6 or 200 BHT to rent a scooter for 24 hours.

What documents are necessary to rent a scooter?

You need to have a valid driver’s license and a passport. They require you to leave your passport as a guarantee for the scooter. Another option is to leave cash. The prices are for 24 hours or ½ day rent.

Be careful with the roads, as some places are tricky, and a moment of distraction can cost you a fall.

Some tips from us, regarding renting and operating a scooter in Thailand

Always bring a helmet while riding a scooter. It can save your life.
Check if your scooter’s lights and brakes work well. For example, you may try the scooter in front of the shop, just to make sure it is 100 % safe to be operated.
Take some photos of the scooter at the time of rent. There may be scratches from previous use, so make sure to picture them. That way, you will have proof they were already there when you rented it.
Make sure to fill the gas tank with fuel. You don’t want to get into a situation where you should walk a few kilometers to find a gas station.
Drive your scooter on the left side of the road in Thailand.
Do NOT exceed the speed limits and drive responsibly. Pai is a party place, but you should not drink and drive.
Stay away from violating the laws, because you may find yourself in jail, or with a huge fine.
Download a phone app called MapsMe, to use it for navigation only through your GPS, no internet is required. For instance, when you have access to WiFi, download their map for Northern Thailand, and use it later. Their maps have all of the listed attractions.

What to See and Do in Pai and Around | A Handful Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 Traveling with a Van from Chiang Mai, Check-in at the Hostel and an Evening Walk in Pai

The first day we took a van from Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Station and traveled around 3 hours to Pai. The van is going directly to Pai’s bus station which is in the center of the town and easily accessible. It is a small town and everything is very close.

After check-in at our guest house, we got some rest from the journey with the van and later went out to find food.

We decided to check the vendors at Pai Walking street. You can find everything you need there – delicious food, refreshing ice tea, handmade souvenirs, and presents. I loved the handcrafted jewelry and bags.

Ivan and I spent a great time walking around and exploring Pai’s streets at night.

Day 2 Explore The White Buddha Statue, Pai Memorial Bridge, Pai Canyon, Elephants and Waterfalls

The next morning, we woke up early, got breakfast, and went out to explore Pai and around on a rented scooter. Ivan and I researched some of the attractions nearby and couldn’t be more excited about this day.

The White Buddha Chedi Phra That Mae Yen

Firstly, we visited The White Buddha Chedi Phra That Mae Yen. This place is within walking distance from Pai, about 2 km, and worth visiting it. It is free of charge.

The White Buddha is situated on the top of a hill and offers some amazing views over the surrounding landscape.

There are 353 steps to reach the top. Many people go there to watch the sunset or use this place as a meditation spot in the mornings.

Similar to the temples in Ayutthaya, The White Buddha Chedi Phra That Mae Yen is a place of worship and you should dress appropriately. This means you should cover up your shoulders and legs.

There will be a sign asking you to take off your shoes when you reach the top of the stairs. Tip: Bring a pair of socks in your bag, to wear it on the hot tiles if you are with sandals.

The Mae Yen temple nearby consists of two buildings and a few small golden chedis. Additionally, there is another Buddha statue.

Unfortunately, when we visited it, there was a recent fire and the building was partially destroyed.

There is also a coffee shop and a free bathroom down below, where you may buy some water or other cool drinks, before climbing the stairs.

See Elephants at Thom's Pai Elephant Camp

We were riding our rented scooter when, out of nowhere, we saw a few elephants next to the road. Without knowing, we had reached Thom’s Pai Elephant Camp.

Ivan and I were fascinated by the elephants over there and decided to spend some time with them. We bought a bunch of bananas and fed them. After that, we hugged them. <3

It was very nice to see these huge animals closer and to interact a bit. The guides assured us that they take good care of them. We hope it is the truth.

Walk Pai Memorial Bridge or Pai Historical Bridge

Our next stop was Pai Memorial Bridge. It is a famous tourist attraction with an interesting history behind it. You can see beautiful views of the Pai river and the surrounding countryside from there.

Pai Historical bridge is located at kilometer marker 88 on Highway 1095, Mae Malai-Pai Road.

The Japanese Army built it in 1942, to transport weapons and provisions to Myanmar (Burma) during World War II. It was originally made of iron.

In 1946, World War II ended. Japanese soldiers left and burnt down the bridge. This caused the villagers major inconvenience in their ways of transportation over the next years.

The local people got together and rebuilt the bridge again.

However, in 1973 the bridge was destroyed by the severe flooding hitting the Pai district.

Local administration asked Thai authorities for help and rebuilt the bridge, now using steel, to retain memories of the past.

The renovated bridge, what exists today as a tourist attraction, was finally commissioned in 1976.

There is no entrance fee to walk on the bridge. Be careful with the wood pieces, though.

Enjoy Metal Figures Art & Stop for Lunch

There are a few small restaurants and cute little coffee shops on both sides of Pai Memorial Bridge, where you can stop for a break and food.

At one of them, called Roadside Thai Restaurant, we saw these beautiful figures, made of metal and steel recycled parts.

We got lunch at the nearby Vintage Garden Pai. They offered delicious local food and excellent customer service.

Go for a Hike at Pai Canyon (Kong Lan)

Pai Canyon or Kong Lan is located very close to Pai Historical Bridge and it was our next stop in that hot afternoon. It is located off Highway 1095, about 8 km south of Pai.

We did a small hike in the canyon, which was very easy and pleasant. You should have comfortable shoes, preferably hiking shoes, as there are some slippery parts on the trail.

Pai Canyon is also the perfect place to watch the sunset.

There is no fee to enter the canyon. You can find vendors at the entrance who are selling bottled water, snacks, and souvenirs. It is a magical place to be and shouldn’t miss it if you are visiting Pai.

Find Pam Bok Waterfall

Because I love waterfalls, we decided to find Pam Bok Waterfall. It is located not too far from Pai, around 20 minutes riding. Once you get there, you will see a parking lot where you can leave your scooter.

As of 2019, there is 40 Baht entrance fee that you should pay to see the waterfall.

From the car park, we walked around 10 minutes on a scenic jungle trail, until reaching the cliffs with the waterfall.

There wasn’t much water when we went in January. However, Pam Bok Waterfall is a beautiful place and still worth the visit.

Watch Sunset at Mae She Thai Patthana Chit Chaloem Phra Kiait

On our way back to Pai, we accidentally found Mae She Thai Patthana Chit Chaloem Phra Kiait. It is a beautiful place of worship with many Buddha statues.

The sky that night was in purple tones. We were able to take some unbelievable photos.

Back in Pai - Go Out for Dinner & Cocktails at Sunset Bar

After all day of exploring around Pai, we finally got back to our hotel. We quickly refreshed ourselves and went out for dinner, plus some well-deserved drinks.

Ivan and I found this cool place called Sunset Bar, where the atmosphere is very chill out, and the cocktails are delicious! Good vibes and excellent customer service are what we needed that night.

Day 3 Rent a Scooter and Explore Tham Nam Lod Caves

We saved the best part for the last day of our stay in Pai. I am not sure if you know how much I love caves! Their place in my heart is right after the waterfalls. 🙂

However, that morning, we rented a scooter from Pai and traveled on a day trip to the famous Tham Nam Lod Caves.

Where are Tham Nam Lod Caves Located?

Tham Nam Lod Caves are about 30 miles north of Pai. It will take you an hour to get there, due to the many curves and windy conditions on the road. It is a beautiful ride, though, and you are passing through a gorgeous forest.

There is no entrance fee for the caves itself, but you need to pay for a local guide if you want to see them.

Tham Lod Caves Park

We paid 150 Baht per person for the first two caves (Big Column Cave and Doll Cave) and shared the 300-Baht cost with another tourist from the United States to get a two-way bamboo raft for Coffin Cave.

a lady who was very informative, and also spoke English quite well.

Once we reached it, the guide lit up the lantern, and we entered into the first one – Big Column Cave. Inside the caverns is very dark, so having someone to light the trail is very helpful.

Explore All Three Caves - One of Them on a Bamboo Raft

The first two caves are easy to walk. However, the stairs were a bit slippery and we needed to pay attention to where we step.

On the other hand, to go inside the third cave, you need to use a bamboo raft. That is why we paid the extra fee for it in the beginning.

Big Column Cave

The first cave has a 21-meters high column in the middle of the hall. Stalagmite and stalactite converged and formed this natural phenomenon.

Doll Cave

The guide lighted up our way and pointed to different cave formations that look like animals – a crocodile, an elephant, and a snake. We could notice some beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, lit up only through the lantern light.

Explore Coffin Cave on a Bamboo Raft

After 40 minutes of exploring the first two caves, we finally reached the third one, called Coffin cave.

Its name comes from the boats that scientists found inside. These vessels looked like coffins and belonged to ancient people.

However, it was time to ride on a bamboo raft, and we were super excited to try it. Ivan and I sat comfortably in the canoe and went on an amazing adventure!

The view from inside is stunning.

There is fish swimming around the raft, and you can feed it, as you go along the Lang River. Some tourists buy special food at the entrance and enjoy their time while exploring the third cave.

I am not sure what fish was there, but it was huge! You may notice the dark spots in the water, on the previous photo with the bamboo raft and the guide. Scroll back up. Can you see the fish?

Our tour finished on the other side of the cave. It was an awesome journey to travel and one to remember!

We took some more photos at the final point, said goodbye to the wonderful guide, and left back to Pai.

In the late afternoon, we traveled the same road to Pai. The journey to Tham Lod Caves and back is worth it by itself. You pass through beautiful mountains views like

There are a few more fun activities you can enjoy around Pai.

For example, you may relax and soak in Pai Hot Springs. We tried to visit it, but it was closed when we went.

Or, you can explore the nearby backcountry, and visit the rice fields. This is what we did, and we loved it!

Another famous tourist attraction is the Pai Bamboo Bridge. You should pay 30 Baht for an admission fee. We decided to pass it and instead, took a photo of the bamboo bridge at our accommodation.

Day 4 Check out & Final Thoughts

On the next day, Ivan and I checked-out from our lovely place, said goodbye to Pai, and traveled back to Chiang Mai.

We used the same transport company, and bought the tickets from the bus station in Pai, the night before.

Neither of us wanted to leave so soon, but we were running to catch a flight from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur, and from there, flying to New Zealand.

Otherwise, we would stay in Pai at least one more week. It is a backpacker’s paradise and our favorite town in Thailand.

We would love to return someday and explore even more of Pai.

Ayutthaya | Day Trip from Bangkok

Ayutthaya is the former capital of Thailand and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Centre since 1991. Once an important hub of global commerce and the largest city in the world, it is now an archaeological place with remains of tall towers and Buddhist monasteries.

The ancient city is located about 85 km north of Bangkok. Therefore, you can visit yourself and get a train / a bus to Ayutthaya, or book a guided day trip with a local travel agency. We chose the second option and went on a tour.

Learn About the Past of Ayutthaya

Some Basic History

This old city was the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom. Founded back in 1350, until the 18 century, Ayutthaya was one of the largest urban areas in the world and a very important trade center. Moreover, the capital was strategically located on an island, surrounded by three rivers, connecting it to the sea.

Unfortunately, the Burmese army attacked Ayutthaya in 1767. They burned it to the ground and forced the residents to leave and abandon the city.

Today, Ayutthaya is an extensive archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Ayutthaya Day Trip from Bangkok

While staying in Bangkok, we decided to explore the nearby historic city of Ayutthaya. Ivan and I booked a guided day trip with a local agency. It cost us 500 THB per person (around $15) at that time and included: a pick-up and a drop-off at our accommodation, an English-speaking guide, air-conditioned transport, all entrance fees, and lunch at a Thai restaurant. You will easily find a lot of travel agents in Bangkok who provide this tour.

By the way, if you haven’t researched any names in advance, don’t worry. We didn’t either. For instance, we went for a walk on Khao San road and saw the offer on an agency’s window. Don’t forget to check a few sellers before booking, because you may get a lower price for the same tour, at the next travel company, down the road.

The next morning, a van came and picked us from our hotel. We traveled around 1.5 hours to Ayutthaya, on a relatively good paved road, and arrived there around 10 pm. It was a beautiful day with blue skies, perfect for exploring and taking photos.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkhol

Our tour started with visiting Wat Yai Chai Mongkhol. Unfortunately, we weren’t the only ones. There were already crowds of tourists wandering around.

Never mind, we managed to find beautiful spots without any people in the photos!

Historical Background

In the year 1357, two princes of Ayutthaya, Chao Kaeo and Chao Thai, died of cholera. King Ramathibodhi I (r. 1350 – 1369) ordered the bodies of both princes to be exhumed and at the cremation site, a monastery with a holy monument (stupa) and a preaching hall (vihara), be established. He gave the monastery the name “Wat Pa Kaeo” or “The Monastery of the Crystal Forest”.

Wat Phra Mahathat & Buddha Head in a Tree Ayutthaya

Our next stop was Wat Phra Mahathat. The ancient temple was built around the 14th century.

Unfortunately, the Burmese invasion of the city destroyed it in 18 century. The site remained abandoned until the early 1950s when the Department of Fine Art of Thailand began the restoration work.

How did The Buddha Head get There?

We learned from our tour guide that there is still no exact answer to how the Buddha’s head became entwined in the roots of a Banyan tree. Among many theories, one suggests that the tree grew around the head of the Buddha when the temple was left abandoned.

On the other hand, another theory suggests that a thief tried to steal it but couldn’t move the heavy head beyond the walls and left it behind.

Reclining Buddha Statue Wat Lokayasutharam

The next place we visited on our day trip was the statue of The Reclining Buddha at Wat Lokayasutharam. It is the largest statue of Reclining Buddha in Ayutthaya and a popular pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Furthermore, the statue was constructed of bricks and cement during the Middle Ayutthaya Period and it is very well preserved nowadays, compared to other monuments in the Historical Park.

As with other similar Buddha monuments, the head is placed on a lotus flower, and the legs overlap squarely to show the equalized toes. Moreover, the statue is 37 meters long and 8 meters high. It’s pretty impressive, isn’t it?

Wat Phu Khao Thong (Golden Mount)

Another beautiful place in Ayutthaya is Wat Phu Khao Thong. This monastery is situated in the field called “Thung Phu Khao Thong” which means “Golden Mountain”, located on the northwest outside of the Ayutthaya city isle. The main monument is a huge square-based Stupa, called Phukhao Thong.

According to Ayutthaya Chronicles, King Ramesuan built this monastery in 1387. It also says that he made it in celebration of his victory over the Burmese invaders.

Stop for Lunch & Afternoon Walk at Wat Phra Si Sanphet

Our day trip to Ayutthaya included lunch. Around noon, the guide took us to a lovely restaurant where we ate delicious Thai food, served family-style on long tables. I guess the travel companies have an arrangement with this place and bring tourists for lunch on a daily basis. After the one-hour break, we visited the ruins of the majestic Wat Phra Si Sanphet.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet

Wat Phra Si Sanphet, or the temple of the Buddha Si Sanphet, was the most important temple of Ayutthaya. It was first built in the 14th century and reached the peak of its glory in the second half of the 17th century.

Being a part of the Royal Palace complex, the temple used to be a place where the royalties performed their sacred rituals. Another interesting fact is that there weren’t any resident monks at this place. They were only invited here on special religious occasions.

How to dress for visiting Ayutthaya

As with all temples and sacred places, remember to dress formally when visiting Ayutthaya. Therefore, men should wear long pants (that’s why Ivan is wearing these funky elephant pants :-)), women should cover their knees (a skirt below knees is ok) and shoulders (no tank tops, a t-shirt is fine). This is a sacred Buddhist site, so we need to respect it by wearing suitable clothes.

Some more tips before heading to Ayutthaya

The ideal time to visit Ayutthaya is in winter months from November to February. The hottest months are March to May and the rainy season comes from June to September.
Spending one day in Ayutthaya is more than enough.
You will learn more about the history of this place if you get a local guide (our opinion for visiting historic places).
Take a bottle of water, a hat (for example a head ban or a scarf works too), and sunscreen with you since you may be walking around temples under the sun for long time. Put also comfortable shoes!

Go back to Bangkok and final thoughts

Around 4 pm, we got in the van and traveled back to Bangkok. The driver left us at our hotel, which was very nice of him. At the end of the day, we were super tired from walking under the sun but very satisfied with this guided tour.

In conclusion, if you are visiting Bangkok, definitely book a day trip to Ayutthaya and explore the former capital of Thailand. It is a must-see historic place, equal, for example, to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. We are sure that you’ll love it as much as we did!

What to see and do on a budget in Singapore

Singapore | What to See & Do On a Budget

Singapore has the most developed economy in Southeast Asia and a high standard of life. Therefore, when you visit it, you can expect to spend quite a lot of money for different activities and accommodation.

However, there are still some free or cheap things to do if you travel like us, on a budget.

Ivan and I spent 3 wonderful days in this beautiful country. Here is a list of the places we saw and things we did while we were in Singapore.

Travel by public transport

Singapore’s transport system is excellent. You can either use light trains (LRT), buses or subway (MRT) to move around the island on a budget.

Every station has a map and you can easily orientate how to get from point A to point B.

If you want to travel cheaply, there are 2 types of prepaid cards that you can buy and use for a discounted price of your ticket.

EZ-Link Card

From Singapore Changi Airport, we bought at a counter two EZ-Link cards for S$12 each. They were already with S$7 preloaded credit inside. The rest S$5 of the price goes for the plastic card itself.

It is valid for 5 years, so you can use it the next time you visit Singapore, or just keep it as a memory.

When your credit becomes S$3 or below, you should pop the card up if you want to continue using it.

Notice that if you pop the card with more money than you need, you can take your money out of the card at any station.

Cost: S$12

The Singapore Tourist Pass

The other option is to buy The Singapore Tourist Pass. It is a special EZ-Link Card that offers unlimited travel on public buses, MRT and LRT trains for certain days.

Its price depends on the number of days you want to use it – S$10 for 1 day, S$16 for 2 days, and S$20 for 3 days.

Keep in mind that passes are sold with a fully refundable smart card rental deposit of S$10.

The rental deposit is fully refundable when the card is returned to any of the authorized Transitlink Ticket offices in Singapore, including within six days from the date it was first issued.

If you wish to retain the card beyond the 5-day rental period as a souvenir, the S$10 card rental deposit will be forfeited.

After the rental expiry of the card, and if you choose to retain the card, you can continue using it as a normal EZ-link card by topping it up with cash at any of the machines or TransitLink Ticket Offices.

Cost: S$10/S$16/S$20

Eat at Food markets

It doesn’t matter if you are on a budget or not, you should eat at a local food market at least once.

You will find a high variety of delicious meals like rice with chicken, pork or beef meat, noodle soups, fish, and desserts, all of them freshly made daily.

They are sold at very good prices and you will save a few dollars by eating at the market.

During our visit to Singapore, we ate almost all of the time at these local vendors and all meals were very delicious, and also very cheap.

Ivan and I recommend you to find Albert Centre Market & Food Centre, next to Bugis Station, and Maxwell Food Centre, located nearby Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown.

Cost: S$2-S$8

Walk in the Gardens by the Bay

Probably the most visited place in Singapore is Gardens by the Bay.

This is a huge park that includes two conservatories (Flower Dome and Cloud Forest), the Supertree Grove, a Skywalk bridge between the trees, Dragonfly and Kingfisher Lakes, a Children Garden, a Heritage Garden, a Sun Pavilion, and some beautiful sculptures.

It is free to walk next to the lakes, in the gardens and around the Supertrees.

The Supertrees

With their impressive height as tall as a 16-floor building and over 162,000 plants put there, these 18 trees are pretty spectacular and a must-see attraction.

12 of them are located in Supertree Grove and the other 6 are located on the other side of the park, at Golden and Silver Gardens.

What we liked the most about them was the fact that they are not put there only to decorate the park, but also to produce energy.

Some of them have photovoltaic cells to harvest solar energy for lighting up the Supertrees. Others are integrated with the Cooled Conservatories and serve as air exhaust receptacles.

There is an OCBC Skyway bridge which connects the Supertree Grove into a 128-metre long walkway at 22-metre high.

It is opened from 9.00 AM to 9.00 PM and its admission is S$8.

Go there evening time and see the free light and sound show at 7.45 PM and 8.45 PM from above.

Flower Dome

Don’t miss to visit also the two amazing conservatories in Gardens by the Bay – Flower Dome and Cloud Forest.

With its impressive 1.2 hectares, Flower Dome is the largest glass greenhouse in the world and it is listed in the Guinness World Record.

Inside, you can see amazing plants from five continents, which are separated into nine different gardens.

Keep in mind that the inside temperature is 23°C – 25°C and the humidity is 60% – 80%, so you may feel hard to breathe at some point.

Cloud Forest

The Cloud Forest is a tropical conservatory that includes the world’s tallest indoor waterfall at 35 meters.

You can walk up to the top of it and explore some exotic plants that live in cloud rainforests at 2,000 meters above sea level. There is also a spectacular view of the Marina Bay Hotel from here.

The temperatures in this conservatory are the same as in the Flower Dome, but the humidity is even higher – 80% – 90%.

The conservatories are open daily from 9.00 AM until 9.00 PM.

You need to buy a ticket at the counter or online to enter there, but trust us, the price is worth it! It includes both conservatories and costs S$28.

Picture The Merlion Statue and the Light Show

The Merlion is a mystic creature with a half-lion and half-fish body. It is the symbol of Singapore and, therefore, you will see it in a few places around the city.

The main statue is located on the opposite side of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, next to Esplanade Bridge. It is impressive with its size and outlook, so don’t miss to check it closely.

The spot is also perfect for taking some beautiful night photos of the bay.

You can go there and watch the free light and water show coming from the Marina Bay Sands Hotel every evening at 8.00 PM.

Step high at Marina Bay Sands Sky Park

After seeing the gorgeous Marina Bay Sands Hotel from the outside, we were curious to check it also from the inside.

Its architecture consists of 3 vertical buildings and one horizontal building suited on the top which looks like a ship. On our 2 night in Singapore, we visited this hotel for a small walk.

The interior is very spectacular with its fine furniture and shining pieces of art. After passing the main lobby for the guests, we saw a sign leading to a separate entrance and elevators for going on the Observation Deck. We purchased our tickets and caught the elevator leading to the 56th floor.

The view from the top is truly amazing! This place is a great spot for taking shots from above. You can see the whole city from there.

You will find vendors who are selling food and drinks and also a fancy bar where you can purchase a cocktail and enjoy yourself and the 360-degree view.

Despite the crowds and the high entrance fee, the experience was worth it and we recommend to visit this place.

Shop and Pray at Chinatown

Get a bus or a train and go to Chinatown. This neighborhood is full of old buildings and small shops, which are selling delicious meals and colorful souvenirs.

Don’t miss to visit the local market and purchase some traditional spices or try their amazing cuisine.

This neighborhood has also a lot of Buddhist temples which are cultural treasures and must be seen, especially the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.

See Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum

The most beautiful Buddhist temple in Singapore is the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum.

It is located in Chinatown and it is very close to Chinatown MRT Station.

This 4-story building is a place where you can feel the true spirit of this religion and learn more about the history of Buddha.

We were lucky enough to catch one of the traditional ceremonies there and stay a bit to enjoy the magic voices of the prayers.

Go all the way up to the roof where you can see the ten thousand Buddhas pagoda.

Don’t forget to cover yourself. There are robes at the entrance that you can borrow if you are in shorts and a top.

Non-flashed photography is permitted at the museum, but it is not allowed at the Sacred Relic Chamber.

The temple is opened daily from 7.00 AM until 7.00 PM. The museum and stupa Chamber is opened from 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM.

It is free of charge, but you can leave donations if you wish.

Visit Masjid Sultan | Sultan Mosque

This mosque has beautiful architecture and it is a national monument of the country, so it is worth visiting it.

It was built in 1928 and since then has been one of the most important buildings in Singapore.

The temple is located in the historic Kampong Glam district. Everyone can go inside and look around and there are even some free tours of it, provided by the locals.

Keep in mind there are hours for praying in which outside visitors are not allowed. Don’t forget to cover your knees and shoulders before entering the mosque.

Cost: Free

Go inside the Malay Heritage Center

This museum is on the opposite side of Sultan Masjid Mosque. You can combine both attractions and visit them together.

Established in 2005, the Malay Heritage Centre shows the history, culture, and contributions of the Malay community within the context of Singapore’s historical and multicultural society.

There are six permanent galleries spread over the two levels of the building.

The museum is opened daily 10.00 AM – 18.00 PM, except Monday when it is closed.

Cost: S$6

Explore Downtown and Walk by the River

Don’t miss walking the streets of Downtown, especially at night time.

We passed by a few of the attractions such as Bugis Mall, The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, the City Hall and went to the Singapore River.

There is a path along the river where you can enjoy the city’s lights and take beautiful photos. Some of the best bars and restaurants are also located here.

Pass the Footbridge to Sentosa Island

While you are in Singapore, you should definitely visit the nearby Sentosa Island.

It is a paradise for fun with its amusement parks such as Universal Studios Park, Adventure Cove Waterpark, the aquarium Marine Life Park, and the Trick Eye Museum. There are also amazing beaches and a Golf Course.

After a quick look, we decided to buy tickets for an evening music-and-light show called Wings of Time.

Ivan and I chose the cheapest way to get to the island and walked along the Footbridge to Sentosa Island, also known as Sentosa Boardwalk. There is a fee of S$1 to pass it.

It will take you around 20 minutes from the one end to the other and you will have enough time to enjoy the view on your way. Plus, it costs you only a dollar!

Watch Wings of Time Show at Sentosa Island

One of the best shows that we have seen is called Wings of Time. It is open-air, open-sea music and light show full of colors, lasers, and special effects.

This is the perfect ending of your visit to Singapore and it is worth the price. There are daily shows at 7.40 PM and 8.40 PM.

You can buy tickets directly at the counter of the show at Sentosa Island or book and combine online with other attractions on the island.

Cost: S$18 and above

Fly cheaply from Changi Airport

Similarly to what we did, you may choose Singapore Changi airport as a start point for your Southeast Asia travels to Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, or even Vietnam.

There are cheap flights from Singapore to all of these countries, so consider it when making plans for a holiday in Asia.

Final Thoughts

Although it is an overall expensive country, there are many free or cheap things to do in Singapore when you travel like us on a budget.

We had a lot of fun while we were there and recommend you visiting this country at least once.

You can use it to find a place to stay almost everywhere. Booking.com is also very loyal to its customers, with great discount programs and offers for members. The more you travel, the more discounts and perks you will have. For example, a complimentary breakfast is added to your room reservation.

We’ve used it many times, like when we traveled in Singapore, to find different types of accommodation as hotels, hostels, cabins, and even campgrounds.

In the last few years, they’ve also been offering vacation homes and have become a leader in this type of booking.

Airbnb.com is becoming more and more popular in the last few years. Their way of doing business is different from other websites.

When we were in Santiago, Chile, we used Airbnb twice to rent a whole apartment for the price of a hotel room. Both times, it was a great deal!

We used Agoda.com a lot to find cheap accommodation when we traveled in Asia.

They offer plenty of deals for small hotels, family-owned hostels, and guesthouses.

For example, we found this lovely private cabin in Pai, Thailand, just for a few dollars.

Many times, Agoda.com showed us cheaper hotels than other websites and saved us a ton of money. We suggest you make a profile to receive even more extensive discounts.

Hostelworld.com

If you need simple accommodation, only a clean bed, and a shower, then Hostelworld.com would be an excellent fit for you.

Ivan and I used this website mainly when traveling in Thailand and New Zealand. It saved us a lot of money, especially in areas that are overrated and more expensive, like big cities.

You can find many cheap hostels and cute guest houses at incredible prices. This website also shows results for private rooms, so give it a try.

Trivago.com

It is a search engine that compares prices from different websites and gives you the cheapest available option among many.

Trivago.com is internationally recognized and works well in plenty of countries. If English is not your preferred language, they also offer you to translate the page into a few other languages.

We used Trivago a few times to check prices between hotels at a location, and the whole process was very easy and customer friendly.

Alaska is a land full of mystery and endless beauty. It is also a peaceful place where people live in sync with nature and its wonders. We had the amazing opportunity to visit Alaska twice, back in 2013 and 2014. During this time, we fell in love with its gorgeous mountains, blue glaciers, and wild rivers. The place opened our eyes to the beauty of this world. Moreover, it inspired us to travel more frequently, and further.

How we got there

Our amazing adventure in Alaska started back in 2013 when Ivan and I decided to leave Europe and go to the USA for first time. We found summer jobs at Kennicott Glacier Lodge, a family-owned hotel up in the mountains, at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. It is the biggest US National park and worth visiting at least once in your life. Both of us were super excited that we would have the opportunity to spend 3.5 months at this magic place. Of course, before going there, we researched some basic information about Alaska, its history, and the weather.

What we didn't imagine

was that once you land at the Last Frontier, you are going to another world. This state is very beautiful and has so much to offer! You name it: Hiking, Fishing, Kayaking, Camping, Ice climbing, Flying on a single-engine plane, Going on Historical Tours, Back Country Backpacking… The list of activities is very long. I recommend you to check some of the local guide companies who provide a variety of memorable tours over there. If you are heading to the historic town of Kennicott, two awesome tour companies there are Kennicott Wilderness Guides and St. Elias Alpine Guides.

In the northern parts of Alaska, you can enjoy the most beautiful nature’s creation – Aurora Borealis. We were lucky enough to see it twice. Watching the Northern Lights is an event that leaves you speechless. You start wondering if you are still on planet Earth. On the other hand, if you go to southern parts of Alaska, near its gulf, you may notice whales, swimming along with your boat.

Alaska is an amazing travel destination but an expensive one too!

Both of us wish to return to this magical place one day. I won’t pass the fact that traveling in this state is more expensive, and the prices in the stores are higher. The accommodation also costs more if you compare it with other holiday places. The reason is that these hotels are in remote locations. Moreover, most of the products needed for a functioning summer lodge, for example, come directly from Anchorage, which is a few hundred miles away. It is crazy, isn’t it?

Travel cheaper in Alaska

However, you can still travel on a budget in the Last Frontier. Consider booking cheap accommodation as an option and sleeping in hostels or campgrounds, as well as cooking most of your food on your way. Here is the moment to mention that there is some kind of funny misunderstanding in many people about Alaska’s temperatures, and how cold it is there. No, it isn’t freezing in the summer months, and going camping is completely possible. Watch out for bears though! 🙂

Weather in Alaska

We had wonderful weather in Alaska, full of sunny and warm days. There were even a few hot afternoons, which Ivan and I spent on a small lake and swam in it.
In general, the average daily temperatures were around 70F in May, got as high as 90F in July-August, and dropped down to 50F in September. During these months, we saw how nature bloomed, and three seasons changed in front of our eyes. You should see it yourself.

Final thoughts

When you move for 4 months from a big city to an almost untouched place in the mountains, your perspective for life changes and becomes better. We will never be the same after the time spent there.
We strongly recommend putting Alaska on your Bucket List. This is an inspiring destination, full of fun activities and endless trails, which would leave you without a breath over and over again…
